Enterprise Community Partners is expanding its faith-based development initiative to Texas and focusing on churches in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.

A national nonprofit developer is seeking to work with churches, mosques and synagogues in San Antonio , Houston and Dallas to build more than 800 affordable homes on congregations’ underused land. As housing costs soar in Texas , Enterprise Community Partners is expanding what it calls its “faith-based development initiative” in the Lone Star State with a $1 million grant from the T.D. Jakes Foundation and Wells Fargo .

Eyeing successes in Austin, San Antonio council member proposes policies to spur affordable housing Congregations see the tidal wave of demand for affordable housing in their communities and want to help make a dent in the shortage of low-cost options. “Many are thinking about the missional aspect of this,” Bowers said. There can also be a financial benefit.

More than half of San Antonio-area renter households spend too much of their income on rent “A big part of our work is equipping the houses of worship to be good stewards of the land and helping them make sure they have a good team in place to make sound decisions,” Bowers said. Enterprise has cohorts operating in Atlanta, Baltimore, Miami, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C., and it has worked with city agencies and businesses to cover costs.
