CLEVELAND, Ohio - A building condemned for a decade on Hough Avenue is now home to 116 affordable apartments, with rents ranging from $900 to $1,200 a month.“As a mother, it makes you feel safe and secure.
You can’t just come in — you have to have access. And that’s what really tied me to the building,” George said. The building includes a community center called The Hub, which puts mental and physical health services, job training and entrepreneurship resources steps from every resident’s front door.“This is the street I grew up on. Literally, my mama’s house is like six doors down from here. And to see a place that was blighted, was dark — has life,” Howse-Jones said.“You don’t have to take 50 million buses. You can go outside of your door — less than 100 feet — and be connected to healthcare, job opportunities, entrepreneurship, and just the connection to community,” Howse-Jones said.Developer Dr. Gina Merritt started the project in 2021 and nearly watched it fall apart. “The project actually started to come apart in the summer of 2022 when the interest rates started rising. We had a six million dollar hole in the project that took us two years to fill,” Merritt said.“We’re going to help people who live in this building and live in the neighborhood manifest their dreams — so they can better take care of themselves and their families,” Merritt said.Fostoria man recovering after dog attack, chihuahua killedKindergarten teacher accused of grooming, sexually abusing teen for years, lawsuit saysAkron woman charged with assaulting paramedic
