Nick Reiner, son of Hollywood legend Rob Reiner, faces murder charges in the stabbing deaths of his parents. His court appearance revealed ongoing legal delays, while his brother Jake shared his heartbreak over the tragedy.
Nick Reiner , the 32-year-old son of Hollywood icon Rob Reiner , made another court appearance on Wednesday as he faces serious charges related to the brutal stabbing deaths of his parents.
Dressed in a yellow jail uniform and blue pants, with his closely cropped hair, Reiner appeared pale and anxious in the LA Superior Court before Judge Sam Ohta. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of special circumstances involving multiple murders, and two counts of using a deadly weapon—a knife.
Prosecutors allege that Nick killed his father and mother, Michele, at their $13.5 million home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on December 14 of last year. The victims suffered multiple stab wounds before their son fled the scene. During the hearing, Reiner, who has been in custody since his arrest, seemed confused when Judge Ohta asked if he agreed to delay the case to a September hearing.
After consulting with his public defender, Kimberly Greene, he softly agreed to appear again on September 15, when a preliminary hearing will be scheduled to examine the evidence. Greene informed the court that she is still awaiting some discovery evidence from prosecutors, while Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chong stated that they are still waiting for the autopsy reports on both victims. Reiner, who has a history of mental health issues, will remain in jail until the next hearing.
His younger sister, Romy, reportedly discovered their parents' bodies, and the case has drawn significant attention due to the family’s prominence in Hollywood. The possibility of the death penalty has been raised by LA District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who described the case as 'death penalty eligible.
' He emphasized that the decision would be made after a thorough review of mitigating and aggravating circumstances, including input from the defense. Meanwhile, Nick’s older brother, Jake, shared his devastation in a heartbreaking essay on Substack, detailing the moment he learned of his parents' murders and his brother’s alleged involvement.
Jake described the loss as 'too devastating to comprehend,' expressing grief over the fact that his parents would not witness his future milestones, such as his wedding or the birth of his children. He also expressed anger and sorrow over the violent nature of their deaths and the involvement of his brother, whom he referred to only as 'my brother.
' Jake wrote that the tragedy has left him and his sister Romy in a state of constant anguish, with every aspect of their lives now tied to the horrific event. Despite the passage of nearly six months, the pain remains unbearable, and the family continues to grapple with the unimaginable loss
