EUCLID, Ohio - The Euclid Animal Shelter is operating at double its capacity, with nearly every room packed with kennels to house cats and dogs waiting for homes. The shelter, which operates as part of the Euclid Police Department , has become so overcrowded that staff are storing animals in multiple rooms throughout the facility.
Captain Mitch Houser said the crisis stems largely from irresponsible breeding and owners abandoning their pets. “Irresponsible breeding or owners simply just releasing their pets into the wild in the hopes that someone will take care of them, it’s frustrating, and quite frankly, disgusting,” Houser said. Houser said those cases make up the vast majority of pets at the shelter. Despite ongoing adoptions, more animals continue to arrive.Holiday adoptions can help, but volunteers say it is important they are done responsibly. Staff report that many people adopt dogs or cats as surprise gifts, only to return the animals in January. “Animals are not presents, they’re family members, so if there is a thought about bringing in a pet into the house and into the family during the holidays, it’s a great idea, but it’s a conversation to have before go looking,” Houser said.Pet Pals is a non-profit that partners with the shelter to provide care for the animals and is almost entirely made up of volunteers.
