A colossal 750-tonne crane was employed to carefully extract the 18th-century warship's mizzen mast (rear), foremast (front), and bowsprit (the bow), marking a pivotal phase in the ambitious £42 million restoration project. These towering structures have now been delicately lowered and positioned adjacent to the ship's side at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where they await the commencement of intricate conservation work.
The foremast was successfully removed on Monday, followed by two additional days of meticulous labor to relocate the mizzen mast and bowsprit. Patrizia Pierazzo, the deputy project director for HMS Victory, expressed her satisfaction with the operation, stating, 'The removal of the mizzen mast and bowsprit was a great success, and the insights gained from the foremast removal earlier in the week significantly aided the team.
This was a highly precise operation that demanded the expertise of a diverse range of specialists, and we are extremely pleased with the results.
' The main mast of HMS Victory was previously dismantled in 2021, and a comprehensive scaffolding structure will now encase the ship, remaining in place until the conservation efforts are completed in 2033. HMS Victory, recognized as the world's oldest commissioned warship, holds immense historical significance as Nelson's flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar. It was on this very ship's quarterdeck that the revered admiral met his tragic end, fatally struck by a French sniper on October 21, 1805.
Originally launched at Chatham in 1765, the vessel had fallen into a state of disrepair by the 1920s and was subsequently relocated to a dry dock in Portsmouth, Hampshire, in 1922. Andrew Baines, the executive director of museum operations for the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN), described this milestone as 'a key moment for The Big Repair project, marking the first time Victory will have been without all her masts since the early 1890s.
' He elaborated, 'Our team has meticulously planned this phase, but we must also contend with unpredictable factors such as the weather. To ensure safety and uninterrupted progress, we conducted the lifts overnight, allowing us to work for several hours at a time.
' The operation itself was a spectacle, with the 750-tonne crane stationed on-site for a week. Baines added, 'We have gleaned invaluable knowledge from the removal of the main lower mast in 2021, and once all masts are safely stored, we can commence the critical task of conserving them before their eventual reinstallation on the ship in 2033.
' Stuart Sheldon, the lead rigger for the NMRN, shared his perspective on the significance of the endeavor, stating, 'HMS Victory holds a special place in the hearts of many, and that brings immense pressure. This lift is incredibly complex and demands absolute precision. Executing the plan on the night will undoubtedly be a career highlight for the entire team.
' Despite the ongoing restoration work, HMS Victory and the broader Historic Dockyard site, which also houses HMS Warrior and the remnants of the Mary Rose, will remain accessible to visitors
