Three demographics experienced a drop in representation from UNC - Chapel Hill over the past 12 months, according to the school. TheJust over 10% said they are Hispanic, a dip of .7%, UNC noted. Meanwhile, American Indian and Alaska Native-identifying freshmen also declined in representation, as 1.1% accepted admission to the university this year, compared to 1.6% from 2023-24, according to the school. This year’s freshman class is the first to be admitted to the university since the Supreme Court ruled in 2023 that the U.S.’ “constitutional history” doesn’t “tolerate” considering race in college applications. Admissions at both UNC - Chapel Hill and Harvard were involved in theRachelle Feldman, vice provost for enrollment, claimed that while it is too soon to consider the data as a trend, UNC is committed to balancing diversity initiatives within the limits set by the Supreme Court. We are committed to following the new law. We are also committed to making sure students in all 100 counties from every population in our growing state feel encouraged to apply, have confidence in our affordability and know this is a place they feel welcome and can succeed,” she said. Other colleges have reported little change in representation by non-White groups this academic year. The Yale Daily News, the school’s student newspaper, found that the shares of Black- and American Indian-identifying students at the university didn't change from last year.Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Yale leadership wrote in a letter to students that the school could still balance its diversity goals with its legal obligations. “Our priorities today remain unchanged from June: fully complying with the law, continuing to support a diverse and inclusive community, and maintaining a world-class admissions process that considers each applicant as an individual,” Pericles Lewis, dean of Yale’s undergraduate school, and Jeremiah Quinlan, dean of undergraduate admissions, wrote.
