— The spring construction period is well underway, which means more state Department of Transportation workers will be on the roads. It's a reminder for drivers to slow down, move over, and stay alert while driving through work zones to help protect highway and roadside workers. In 2025, there were more than 360 work zone crashes on DOT roads, resulting in dozens of injuries and two fatalities.
"We try to do the best that we can with our work zones but people still intrude on them," said Thomas Williams, NYS DOT employee. "They don't understand that they can get tickets for that. It can be double. I mean, we all wanna go home to our kids, our wives, our grandkids.
It's a hard job. I love my job but it's a hard job.
" Throughout the remainder of this week, state police will be conducting targeted enforcement in active thruway work zones. Rochester, N.Y. — Police said they were working to recover a body under a bridge in the High Falls neighborhood Wednesday morning.
