WESTLAKE, Ohio - Monday, the Westlake Police Department charged a man who walked onto I-90 and threw a hammer at a semitruck on April 16.
Police first received a call about a 51-year-old pickup truck driver involved in a road-rage incident with a semitruck near Cleveland and Lakewood. According to police, the pickup was brake-checking the semi, and the driver apparently “flipped the bird” at the semi. The pickup driver pulled over to the berm, exited his car and waited for the semi to pass, then threw a hammer at the truck.
Police reported the hammer struck both the semitruck and the side of a cab. Westlake police used Flock camera footage to identify the pickup’s license plate and were notified by Cleveland police that the man was wanted for felony vandalism. The suspect had been wanted for vandalizing various downtown hotels and the Cleveland Convention Center.
“The man earned felony vandalism charges as the cost for repairs would be over $100,000,” the Westlake Police Department said. Through a license plate match and a tip from Cleveland police, Westlake officers tracked the suspect to his Columbia Road home. The suspect was taken into custody on Monday and admitted to both the road-rage incident and throwing the hammer.
The pickup driver was charged with criminal damaging by Westlake police, and Cleveland police later detained him on Cleveland jurisdiction charges.
