This year, in 2025, Bexar County followed through on the plans to make that crossing safer, but there's been a setback. The new highwater detection system was put in earlier this year and detects when there is water on the crossing which will trigger two guard arms to come down and stop cars from trying to cross. Bexar County Public Information Officer Monica Ramos told us, just a few weeks ago, that system was severely vandalized and isn’t working right now. “Someone went out there and just completely wrecked that cabinet, ripped it right off the pole and took the entire cabinet and all the electronic components inside of it with them. In addition to that, that arm, that guard arm was broken beyond repair,” said Ramos.Right now, they don’t have a timeline for when this highwater detection system will be working again. In the meantime, Ramos said Bexar County Crews will be monitoring all low water crossings regularly and set up barricades as needed.
