Despite officiating being a major part of sports, AHSAA officials said they are still below their preferred number of referees.

) - Despite officiating being a major part of sports, AHSAA officials said they are still below their preferred number of referees. According to Ken Washington , Director of Officials for the AHSAA , the number of officials drastically reduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Washington, nationwide referee recruiting has since increased by 6 percent, while Alabama’s recruiting has increased by 20 percent. Despite this, Washington said the state can still use more officials, specifically officials who live in rural areas. “We’re recruiting, recruiting, and recruiting. We’re always recruiting, but there are some areas like red level high school. Those rural areas where officials are driving an hour and a half to two hours to get to schools to officiate those games. We would love for those areas to develop and get some officials in those areas to develop a local association.”We the People: Injured Dothan man pursues the American DreamMillion Dollar Band prepares for upcoming football season
