She was initially charged with murder, but a grand jury indicted her on the lesser charge of manslaughter along with abuse of a corpse.
HENRY COUNTY , Ala. - A Henry County jury convicted a woman accused of placing her son’s remains in a non-working chest freezer after a judge dismissed her manslaughter charge.
Karen Halstead, 46, will be sentenced next month. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a felony conviction. Halstead was initially charged with murder, but a grand jury indicted her on the lesser charge of manslaughter along with abuse of a corpse.
After three days of testimony, Houston County Circuit Judge Henry D. “Butch” Binford granted a direct verdict of acquittal on the manslaughter count, ruling prosecutors failed to prove Halstead contributed to the death of her 19-year-old son, Logan. Prosecutors struggled to link neglect to Logan’s death, and the condition of his body made it difficult to determine a cause of death. He suffered from medical issues including spinal bifida.
Authorities said the family moved from their home in Headland and left Logan’s remains in the freezer. Weeks passed before a resident moving in discovered the remains months later. During the trial, Halstead’s two other children — who no longer live with her — testified against their mother. Charges against Halstead’s husband were dismissed after he died while awaiting trial.
