Project H.E.A.R.T. is a free residential summer camp and is open for students entering junior or senior year of high school in Arkansas or a Delta state. The program is for students who are interested in the medical field.
Applications are now open for one summer program giving students a behind-the-scenes peek into medical school. “We say a lot of times, ‘you can’t be it if you can’t see it.’ So, we try to give these students an opportunity to see that there's a really opportunity to go to medical school right here in northeast Arkansas,” said Casey Pearce, Director of External Relations and Marketing for NYITCOM- Arkansas State .
Project H.E.A.R.T. is a “mini medical school” camp for high school students in 11-12 grades in Arkansas or a Delta state. “We bring in representatives from a lot of different careers: OTs, PTs, doctors, nurses, and the students get to hear what that is like,” Pearce adds. “Our medical students actually serve as counselors and mentor our students for the week, to get to ask them questions about their undergrad experience, and what they’ve experienced getting into and through medical school at this point.” For a second year, Project H.E.A.R.T. will offer a session in Arkadelphia, on the Henderson State University campus, in addition to the traditional session in Jonesboro.“Activities they’ll engage in: they get to dissect a pig heart in our anatomy lab, they get to go through some medical simulations, in our sim lab,” says Pearce. Just as high school students are thinking of their next step, Pearce says with a university, medical school, and several healthcare institutions just in Jonesboro, the opportunities are unlimited for the next generation of healthcare professionals. “Our current medical students, if we asked them when they knew they wanted to be a doctor, they would all say by high school they knew. So, that's a really impressionable time to get them here, and really show the opportunities that exist,” he said. Project H.E.A.R.T. will be from June 5-8, 2024, on the Henderson State campus and June 9-12, in Jonesboro at NYIT.Applications are due April 25 and can be found by clicking here.Want to Share Something with Our Team?
