She battled through the three-part race, including a collision with an intoxicated person on a bike that resulted in hand and wrist fractures. Despite the challenges, Wilson recorded the fastest time of the year and was the first to cross the finish line, experiencing a good feeling that made her feel empowered.
The Gold Nugget Triathlon is a community event usually held around Mother's Day and serves as a huge source of motivation for many young Alaskans, including Helen Wilson, who grew up Nordic skiing. Despite a hand injury, Wilson chose to participate and borrowed equipment from her friends. She also learned valuable lessons about overcoming adversity and the spirit of supporting and cheering each other on within the triathlon community
