Having already explored 150 nations, Simpson contracted the infection in South Asia. The illness initially manifested as flashing lights and blurred vision in his left eye, prompting immediate medical attention and a regimen of powerful medication and immunosuppressants. Doctors worked diligently to prevent the condition from worsening. Simpson explained that the latent TB, a non-contagious form of the disease, specifically targeted his eyesight.
He noticed the initial symptoms while watching television, observing a blur and intermittent flashing in his left eye. As his condition deteriorated, Simpson was forced to cancel planned trips and self-isolate due to a compromised immune system, making him vulnerable to even minor illnesses. He described the difficulty of adjusting to a sedentary lifestyle after years of frequent travel, typically embarking on five or six trips annually.
The isolation meant foregoing social activities like dining out and limiting contact to a small circle of individuals. Medical professionals warned Simpson that delayed diagnosis could have resulted in complete vision loss. At one point, he was managing a complex medication schedule of 25 tablets daily to control the inflammation. While the infection is currently being suppressed, Simpson acknowledges that some vision loss in his left eye is permanent.
He estimates he can now see less than half a person's face with his affected eye, the remainder appearing as a grey blur. The primary concern now is preventing the condition from progressing and impacting his central vision. Despite the significant health setback, Simpson expresses no regret over his travels, stating he would likely make the same choices again, even knowing the potential consequences.
He emphasizes the profound impact vision loss would have on his ability to continue experiencing the world through travel. Simpson believes he contracted tuberculosis through proximity to an infected individual, similar to the transmission of Covid-19, while traveling in South Asia, a region where the disease is prevalent. Although his current TB infection is latent and non-contagious, there remains a risk of it becoming active.
However, Simpson is determined to resume his travels as soon as he receives medical clearance. He has already visited challenging destinations like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Russia, and remains open to exploring even more remote and potentially risky locations. He relies on a network of trusted local guides and contacts to navigate these areas safely.
Simpson believes that almost any location is accessible with the right connections and emphasizes the importance of weighing the risks against the potential rewards of travel. He acknowledges that some individuals prefer to travel independently, but feels he has too much to lose to take unnecessary risks.
