Over 400,000 Casely portable power banks are being recalled due to lithium-ion battery fire risks that have resulted in one death and multiple injuries.
A massive safety recall has been officially expanded for 429,200 units of Casely wireless portable power banks, as the lithium-ion batteries inside these devices continue to present life-threatening dangers to consumers. The recall, which originally began in April 2025, serves as a grim reminder of the volatility associated with poorly regulated battery components.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), these power banks are prone to overheating, expanding, and unexpectedly bursting into flames while users are attempting to charge their mobile devices. The severity of this hazard cannot be overstated, as the product has transitioned from a simple fire risk to the direct cause of fatalities and serious physical trauma. Initially, the CPSC received 51 consumer reports regarding the malfunctioning units, which resulted in six minor injuries. However, in the months following the initial announcement, the situation deteriorated significantly. Regulators have since logged 28 additional reports of the units catching fire or exploding. Among these, two incidents stand out for their tragic and terrifying nature. In August 2024, a 75-year-old woman from New Jersey was using the device to charge her phone on her lap when it ignited. She sustained severe second and third-degree burns, tragically succumbing to her injuries shortly thereafter. In a separate, high-altitude emergency in February 2026, a passenger on an airplane suffered first-degree burns when her Casely charger exploded during flight, highlighting the extreme risk these items pose even in controlled environments. The specific units under scrutiny are Casely Wireless Portable Power Banks, designated as Model E33A. These chargers were distributed widely across various e-commerce platforms, including the official getcasely.com website and Amazon, between March 2022 and September 2024, with retail prices ranging from 30 to 70 dollars. Given the ongoing danger, the CPSC has issued an urgent directive for all owners to cease using these power banks immediately. To facilitate a safe disposal and replacement process, Casely has established a dedicated portal at https://www.getcasely.com/pages/2025-recall. Affected consumers are required to complete an online form and provide photographic evidence of the damaged unit. This includes a photo of the front of the device with the word recalled and the current date written in permanent ink, along with a secondary photo clearly showing the model number on the back of the casing. Providing these images is a mandatory step to secure a free replacement from the manufacturer. Owners are strongly cautioned against attempting to repair or continue using the devices in any capacity, as the chemical instability of the lithium-ion cells makes them unpredictable and inherently dangerous to keep in any household or personal luggage
