Avid and casual stargazers alike have probably heard of the 'blood moon,' a phenomena that turns the moon a reddish hue during a lunar eclipse. But what about the 'pink moon,' which is set to appear this weekend? The April full moon will be visible from about 7:22 p.
m. Saturday through Sunday night, according to NASA and the Old Farmer's Almanac. It is sometimes called the 'pink moon,' but sadly stargazers would have to put on rose-colored glasses to see the moon change color this weekend. The term 'pink moon' actually comes from a plant called moss pink or creeping phlox, according to NASA. Native American tribes in the northeastern U.S. named the moon after the pink-colored plant because it is one of the first to sprout in the spring. Various religious celebrations are associated with the April full moon, which is why it is sometimes called the 'Passover moon' or 'Paschal moon.' The Jewish holiday of Passover always begins on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan, which corresponds to March or April, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Because the Hebrew calendar is calculated based on the positions of the moon and sun, Passover usually falls near the full moon. Likewise, the full moon is used in Christianity to calculate the date of Easter. It is always celebrated the Sunday following the 'Paschal moon,' which is the first full moon to occur after the spring equinox. The April full moon also corresponds with the Hindu festival of Hanuman Jayanti and the Buddhist celebration Bak Poya.
