U.S. Marshals arrested a suspected international war criminal in Mobile on Wednesday
Hamdija Alukic is being held without bond in the Baldwin County Jail. Federal court documents reveal war crimes he is accused of committing in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1992. Alukic’s former neighbor said they lived near each other for several years in Wilmer before Alukic and his family moved.
“That just completely blows my mind cause I never seen that coming, that’s pretty wild,” the neighbor said.According to his former neighbor, Alukic lived a quiet life in Wilmer with his family. “They had dogs, chickens and they would sell eggs to Walmart and stuff. They were always cool. I’ve been over there a few times growing up and stuff. They were real foreign. They didn’t really talk the best English---the dad and the mom anyway,” the neighbor said.Federal court documents allege the 70-year-old man was involved in two attacks during the Bosnian War in 1992. Based on witness interviews, documents say Alukic was a member of a Bosnian Muslim paramilitary group during the civil war that took place from 1992 to 1995 in Bosnia and Herzegovina.Court documents say he is accused of ambushing a car with other members of the same group, shooting at the driver, and setting the vehicle on fire with a body still inside. Black and white photos attached to the court records show the aftermath of that burned vehicle, including a bullet hole. Records also show he is accused of leading a second attack, where he and other members split into two parties and set fire to two different homes with people inside.Alukic’s arrest comes more than three decades after these alleged attacks, thousands of miles away from where they occurred. According to the arrest warrant, authorities are seeking Alukic’s extradition to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he is expected to be prosecuted for war crimes against the civilian population. Most Read
