Point Blank has the only civilian shooting simulator in the state of Alaska with nearly 900 scenarios.
PALMER, Alaska - MatSu Borough residents were eligible this year to enroll in a free 8-hour handgun course through a borough grant that covers 300 to 350 residents, according to Point Blank Firearms and Self Defense Training, who is teaching on the class.
“We’re the size of Rhode Island,” said Donna Anthony, owner of Point Blank Firearms and police chief at the Chickaloon Tribal Police Department. “And sometimes, with the state troopers and Wasilla PD and Palmer PD and with Chickaloon, we might have maybe 12 officers. ” According to Anthony, response times in the valley can be at least 20 minutes or longer in some remote areas.
Courses like this, she said, helps people be prepared in case they ever had to respond to a threat.
“So, it’s very important that we teach civilians what to do if we can’t be there quick enough,” Anthony said. Point Blank has the only civilian shooting simulator in the state of Alaska with nearly 900 scenarios. The scenarios range from home invasions to active shooters. The course covers situational awareness, using voice commands, knowing Alaska gun laws and proper firearm handling under pressure.
The program also goes over what falls under legal self-defense.
“I hear a lot of people say, ‘well, I’m just going to shoot them because they’re stealing my four-wheeler,’” Anthony said. “Well, you can’t shoot over property in the state of Alaska. You can use less lethal, but you cannot use deadly force to stop somebody from stealing property. ”“If you’re going to carry a gun, take that responsibility, take a class, learn the laws,” Anthony said.
