This article explores 10 films that are considered 'gross' due to their unconventional themes, visual aesthetics, and disturbing content. Despite their unsettling nature, these movies are critically acclaimed and considered masterpieces by many film enthusiasts. The article delves into the unique qualities that make each film stand out, highlighting their artistic merit and lasting impact.
There are a few things that can make a movie qualify as gross. If something is intensely gritty and realistic in an uncompromising way, there’s naturally going to be a level of dirtiness and/or griminess aesthetically. A movie could be gross because it’s gory, or maybe it’s something that wants to provoke, shock, or alarm those who dare to watch it. Sometimes, a gross movie might be all of the above.
Gross does not equal bad, though, because a bunch of the following movies are pretty great, while also being pretty gross. Also, if you couldn’t already tell, this kind of gross is different from what’s the highest-grossing, so no, there won’t be any mentions of blockbusters like Titanic or Jurassic Park here. Money has no place here. This ranking is more a realm for bodily fluids, dirt, mud, and alien sights/sounds. Things will get squishy. 10 'Delicatessen' (1991) Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Marc Caro Close Perhaps the grossest thing about Delicatessen is the way it looks, with the entire film having a sickly color scheme that’s effective and stylish, sure, but also kind of hard to look at for about 99 minutes. Still, it’s fitting for the oddball dystopian world this movie takes place in, and the visuals work in tandem with the sometimes grisly story – that involves a scarcity of meat in a dying world – quite well. At least Delicatessen is reasonably funny, as far as dystopian movies go, even if that sense of humor found throughout rides a line between quirky and exceedingly bleak. It’s all a bit weird perhaps for the sake of being weird, but at least it’s an immersive and interesting world, and no one could accuse Delicatessen of lacking imagination, either. 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Rate Now 0/10 Your comment has not been saved Delicatessen R Comedy Science Fiction Fantasy Release Date April 17, 1991 Runtime 99 minutes Director Marc Caro 9 'Bad Boy Bubby' (1993) Directed by Rolf de Heer The darkness and sheer brazenness of Bad Boy Bubby is strong enough that the film still feels shocking when watched today, no matter how well-prepared you might be. Also, chances are, you won't be very well-prepared, given Bad Boy Bubby is a bit of a silly name for a movie, and perhaps suggests something more comedic than the film actually is. Well, there’s some dark comedy here, but also, a lot of it’s just really dark, though not devoid of an odd amount of heart, either. Tonally, Bad Boy Bubby is unstable and all over the place, but given it’s about a man breaking free of the world within which he’d been imprisoned for all 30 years of his life, the disorientation and chaotic qualities feel appropriate. You will see things you can’t unsee. Bad Boy Bubby has no problem making you feel deeply uncomfortable whenever it chooses. 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Rate Now 0/10 Your comment has not been saved Bad Boy Bubby NR Crime Drama Comedy Release Date September 1, 1993 Runtime 114 minutes Director Rolf de Heer 8 'Happiness' (1998) Directed by Todd Solondz What can even be said about Happiness, at least as far as specifics go, while keeping such words at a PG level? This is one of the most soul-crushing, uncomfortable, and taboo-busting films of its decade, and maybe even of all time. You could go into it thinking you're unable to be offended or shocked by something, and then come out the other side feeling like a bit of an idiot for once having such brazen confidence. There are disturbing sights seen – and shocking things said – throughout Happiness, but most of the time, it’s the uncompromising approach to the difficult subject matter that creates a continual unpleasant feeling while watching. So, maybe it’s a slightly more nuanced type of grossness, but it definitely feels worth mentioning. It’s a great movie, though, if you can stomach it, and all the acting’s stellar (especially Philip Seymour Hoffman). 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Rate Now 0/10 Your comment has not been saved Happiness NC-17 Comedy Drama Release Date October 11, 1998 Runtime 139 Minutes Director Todd Solondz 7 'Tetsuo II: Body Hammer' (1992) Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto There might not be many arthouse films that are also sequels, but the cinematic landscape is entirely devoid of them, as the existence of something like Tetsuo II: Body Hammer shows. Admittedly, it’s not quite as gritty, intense, novel, or surprising as the original films – 1989’s Tetsuo: The Iron Man – but it does a good job at hitting the same beats that movie does, and expanding things a little in terms of scop
