Musicians like George Strait, Randy Rogers and Todd Snider got their starts at this trackside San Marcos dive, still a hub for aspiring songwriters.
SAN MARCOS — Missoula Slim is sitting on a worn wooden stage, guitar in hand, looking out at a small crowd. It’s just after 9 p.m. on a Wednesday night at Cheatham Street Warehouse , and a dozen or so musicians are waiting -- guitars in their own hands -- ready for their turn. By day, Slim is really John Gilliam , a local attorney. Now he's laying out rules for the night, though it’s nothing most attendees haven’t heard before. Rule No. 1 : original songs only, no covers. Rule No.
Country stars will help famed San Marcos honky tonk celebrate its 50th birthday Photos on the walls remind the newcomers of who’s come before them. None looms larger than country music superstar George Strait, who performed with Ace-in-the-Hole, “San Marcos’ newest country band,” for the first time at Cheatham Street Warehouse in 1975, a framed flyer proclaims.
Gruene Hall owner Pat Molak was ‘a giant in the annals of Texas music’ “They could take the good things they saw in the Austin scene, but also retain something that some people see as a more Texas sound,” Mellard said. San Marcos had something else going for it: an eager audience of college students at Southwest Texas State, now Texas State University, who would come back night after night.
Sixpence None the Richer celebrates 25th anniversary with homecoming concert It’s one of the rare institutions that played a role in the country booms of both the 1970s and 1990s, Mellard said. “There aren’t many that survived through both of those waves, and are at the centers of the waves.” While Finlay’s highest focus was on songwriting, musicians also learned the ins and outs of the music industry from those who came before them, he said.
Homeschooled and homegrown, meet the New Braunfels country singer set to open for George Strait “I kind of chose to come to school here because I’d heard about Cheatham Street,” he said. He’d written a few songs in high school, “but didn’t really have anybody to share that with,” he said — and he wanted to come play where people he looked up to had started, like James McMurtry, Snider and Rogers.
