Residents near Seattle's Golden Gardens Park voice ongoing concerns about late-night parties, noise, littering, and property damage. The city is responding with plans for private security patrols during weekend evenings to address the issues.
The victim, 35, was with his wife and 12-year-old daughter when a dispute began with another man at the park around 8 p.m. Saturday night.
While the rainy weather may not suggest it, summer is quickly approaching, and for people living near Seattle's Golden Gardens Park, that means loud, late-night parties. Neighbors near the park say concerns have been ongoing for close to a decade, but the frequent parties and noise issues have intensified over the past four years. Despite the beach and park closing at 10:30 p.m., parties happen most summer weekends between the hours of 11:30 p.m. and 4 a.m., according to nearby residents.
'From where they are to my house is almost a full mile,' said Julie VanWallendael, 'and you can hear it through closed doors.' About two dozen residents gathered for a community meeting with city officials at the Golden Gardens Bathhouse on Saturday morning. Representatives from Seattle's Parks and Recreation division, the Seattle Police Department, and local park rangers listened to neighbors' concerns and shared updates on new, possible solutions.
Residents cited noise complaints, littering, and broken beer bottles left scattered on the beach, property damage, and street racing as the biggest issues plaguing the park. 'I'm always picking up broken glass from beer bottles, so I'm thinking, if there are children playing, it's dangerous for them,' said longtime neighbor Laurie Zundel.
At the community meeting Saturday, Jon Jainga, the Seattle Parks and Recreation Community Service Branch Manager, unveiled plans for private security officers to work the park during weekend evening hours. From May 1 until September 30, roughly one to two officers hired from a private security firm will patrol Golden Gardens Park. The officers will be stationed from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. on Thursday-Sunday nights, Jainga said.
With a limited number of park rangers citywide, the parks and recreation department will hire the officers from a private security firm. Jainga also shared plans for added signs listing park rules and hours, and he said additional gates will be added near the park's boat launch to deter unwanted behavior.
Many residents expressed hope that the security officers would prevent the after-hours parties from happening, deter other nefarious activity, and help speed up police response time when needed.'The city has fostered an environment that, because they haven't enforced anything for years, people believe they can do whatever they want down here,' VanWallendael said. 'So, we'll see if they can change the behavior that's been established.'
