Millions of Britons are using Wegovy and Mounjaro for weight loss, but results can be underwhelming. Experts suggest a 7p psyllium husk supplement could boost the effectiveness of these drugs, and even aid weight loss on its own.
Millions of individuals in the UK are utilizing medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro for weight management, but many are experiencing less dramatic results than anticipated.
While some individuals achieve significant weight loss, potentially up to 20% of their body weight, others encounter a plateau in their progress after a few months. Recent insights from experts suggest that a readily available and inexpensive supplement, psyllium husk – costing just 7 pence – could significantly enhance the effectiveness of these weight-loss drugs. Studies indicate that even individuals not using these medications can experience weight loss when incorporating psyllium husk, a fiber-rich supplement, into their routine.
John Lukey, a registered nutritionist at King’s College London, emphasizes psyllium husk as a well-researched and highly effective method for increasing feelings of fullness, reducing overeating, and regulating appetite. He believes that combining it with weight-loss injections can create a powerful synergy. The growing popularity of psyllium husk stems from endorsements by influencers highlighting its appetite-suppressing qualities, but experts concur that it could be particularly beneficial for those using weight-loss injections who are struggling to achieve further reductions.
These medications, known as GLP-1 injections, originally developed as treatments for diabetes like Ozempic, function by artificially increasing levels of the GLP-1 hormone. This hormone, naturally produced in the gut after meals, signals satiety to the brain, leading to reduced food intake and subsequent weight loss.
However, experts stress that these drugs are most effective when combined with a balanced and healthy diet, with fiber playing a crucial role. Fiber, found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains, is known to promote weight loss and reduce the risk of heart disease and bowel cancer. Despite these benefits, a staggering 96% of UK adults fail to consume the recommended daily intake of 30g of fiber.
For context, a single apple provides 4g of fiber, while a cup of chickpeas offers 6g. Psyllium husk is presented as a convenient and efficient way to bridge this fiber gap. Currently, an estimated 2.5 million adults in the UK are using these weight-loss injections, with demand surging since 2023 when Wegovy was approved for weight loss by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for use on the NHS.
Available in pill or powder form, psyllium husk is derived from the outer shell of the plantago ovata plant, a shrub native to desert regions. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to absorb water and form a gel-like substance in the stomach, reducing stomach capacity and promoting feelings of fullness – mirroring the mechanism of GLP-1 injections. Research supports this, with studies demonstrating weight loss even with psyllium husk alone.
A 2023 review in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners revealed that overweight and obese adults who consumed psyllium husk before meals lost over 2 kilograms in under five months. Furthermore, a 2018 meta-analysis indicated that a daily intake of 10 grams of psyllium husk significantly lowered ‘bad’ cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of cardiovascular events. Experts suggest that combining psyllium husk with GLP-1 injections can help overcome weight loss plateaus.
Mr. Lukey cautions against viewing these injections as a standalone solution, emphasizing the importance of adequate fiber intake. Dr. Rubina Aktar, a neuroscientist at Queen Mary University of London, highlights the importance of consistency and adequate hydration when using psyllium husk, particularly for those on weight-loss medications. She also stresses the importance of increasing natural fiber intake for individuals planning to discontinue GLP-1 drugs
