The first season of Amazon MGM's 'Citadel' received negative reviews but was renewed for a second season, which has now been released. Despite a three-year delay, the series has become an immediate streaming hit, ranking second globally at the time of writing.
Eight years ago, Amazon MGM teamed up with the Russo Brothers for what was supposed to be Prime Video 's largest franchise. The studio dedicated hundreds of millions to developing numerous shows set in different cities, building one of the most connected television universes in the world.
However, when the first series arrived, it received negative reviews from critics. Prime Video didn't stop and delivered two more shows. They were both canceled after one season, and development for the remaining spin-offs was paused.
However, the first series remained in the running, and after three years, it is back for a second season. Despite this delay, the series has become an immediate streaming hit, ranking second globally at the time of writing. It remains to be seen if it will topple the reigning king of Prime Video, The Boys, in the coming days or weeks.
The series has not yet garnered enough reviews from critics to earn a score on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers seem impressed, rating Season 2 higher than Season 1. Titled Citadel, the series enlisted seasoned actors in the lead roles as spies in an international organization. Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, and Stanley Tucci star as elite members of an organization that no longer exists after it is obliterated by a powerful group.
However, when a new threat arises, they must form a new team to get ahead of it, as it could spell doom for humanity. Citadel is a spy thriller to the core, for better or worse; it has all the tropes, including global missions, action, and twists. Amazon MGM, under Jennifer Salke, had a huge vision for the franchise and found the best talent, from directors to writers and stars. However, the series was marred with problems as showrunners exited, scenes were reshot, and a six-episode season cost $200 million to make. The show performed decently for Prime Video, but the spin-offs were not the breakout hits Amazon expected to warrant building a universe out of.
The franchise would need roughly the same viewership across all shows for the global spy network to work. When Salke left the company, her primary project was put on hold as the studio focused on releasing the second season. If it performs well, Citadel could continue and probably give the remaining spin-offs an opportunity to make their case.
