Surgeon in London remotely removes prostate of Gibraltar patient using Toumai robotic system across 2,400 km.

A surgeon in London has successfully removed a patient’s prostate in Gibraltar using a remotely controlled surgical robot, marking a milestone for long-distance robotic surgery .The operation was performed on March 4 by Prokar Dasgupta, who leads the robotic center at The London Clinic.

The patient, 62-year-old Paul Buxton, was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer at St Bernard’s Hospital.Using a robotic console in London, Dasgupta remotely guided the Toumai Robotic System to perform a prostatectomy on Buxton. The patient and local surgical team were located in Gibraltar, about 2,400 kilometers away. The procedure relied on a secure high-speed network built by Presidio. The connection created only a 48 millisecond delay between the surgeon’s movements in London and the robot’s actions in Gibraltar.Going the extra mileThe Toumai robot was stationed inside the Kusuma Robotic Surgery Suite at St Bernard’s Hospital. The machine, equipped with multiple arms and a high-definition 3D camera, carried out the surgical steps under the surgeon’s remote control.According to the medical team, the stable network connection was critical to the procedure’s success. Fiber-optic infrastructure linked the two locations, enabling real-time robotic control during the operation. In January, Buxton was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was offered the chance to participate in a telesurgery trial conducted jointly by the London Clinic and the Gibraltar Health Authority. He had originally expected to travel to the UK for the procedure but agreed to undergo surgery remotely instead.“A lot of people actually said to me: “You’re not going to do it, are you?'” Buxton said. “I thought, I’m giving something back here.”Expanding robotic telesurgeryDasgupta said the operation highlights how advanced connectivity and robotic systems could allow surgeons to treat patients across long distances.“I explained to Mr Buxton that we now have the technology to perform this remotely. Why waste time, energy, money and inconvenience to fly over?” he said. “I stay in London, he stays in Gibraltar.”“It is very exciting to be part of this UK first telesurgery.”Remote surgery could help patients in regions where access to highly specialized surgeons is limited. Instead of traveling to major medical centers, patients could receive treatment locally while surgeons operate remotely. The teams involved in the project plan to demonstrate another remote procedure on March 14 during the European Association of Urology Congress in London, where the operation will be livestreamed to thousands of surgeons.
