It’s been nearly two months since it opened up, and the city says it could still be several more weeks before the intersection reopens.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -The giant sinkhole at West St. Clair Avenue and West 3rd street is still creating major disruptions downtown.since it opened up, and the city says it could still be several more weeks before the intersection reopens.
The collapse forced drivers onto detours and adding time to commutes. The sinkhole opened back on March 8, and a time-lapse video captured the moment the street gave way, nWeeks later, repairs are still underway, and the impact is being felt by people who drive, walk, and bike through the area. Downtown cyclist Rita Amonett says getting around has been tougher, especially when heading toward the Flats.
“To bike in Cleveland, you have to be tough and this is yet another moment of being tough,” Amonett said. “It keeps me from accessing the flats in the most direct way, but I work around it. ”visible construction activity“I come by here just about every week and post photos on Facebook of the development of it. I was very excited to see them pouring concrete into it.
I think that was last week or the week before. So, it’ll be exciting when it’s done to finally have this intersection back,” she said. Others say the detours are frustrating because the closure sits in the middle of downtown traffic flow. Daniel Mober calls it a daily inconvenience.
Another resident says the biggest headache now is simply the timeline.
“It’s absolutely frustrating because a different country, they would have built 3-4 bridges by now. It just like, it’s ridiculous,” added a downtown resident.
“The frustration is, I mean, there’s always a way. The frustration, why is it taking so long, that’s it. ” In a statement, Leah Date with the City of Cleveland Division of Water says crews are making progress and multiple utilities are involved.
“The various utilities involved are advancing towards completion of their work. The repairs are expected to be completed in the coming weeks. ”For many downtown residents and commuters, the hope is that after weeks of delays, the intersection will finally reopen soon.
