GENEVA, Ohio - Hundreds of high school students from around the area attended the Inspire Traffic Safety event at the Spire Institute today learning about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving . They heard from speakers and saw displays of a mock crash and funeral about what can happen if they’re not responsible.

The message was clear for students: You put your life and everyone else’s at risk when you choose to drive under the influence or are looking down at your phone. Students heard from speakers who have been impacted in many different ways by distracted and impaired driving, including one man who went to prison for killing a woman while driving under the influence. “You can think a little bit longer in the moment to call somebody, stay somewhere, call an Uber, call a friend to not have to go down the path I did,” Brian Rosenburg said. The event, which was emceed by News 19’s Caitlin McCarthy, included a Walk to Remembrance. Students walked past families and photos of their loved ones they lost, killed in crashes that didn’t have to happen. “Maybe I had a couple drinks, everything is fine, maybe I had some marijuana, everything is fine. Those are the bad decisions. You get behind the wheel, you get into a car with someone else who had done that, you can end a life in a split second,” said Lt. Anthony Fairbanks of the Howland Fire Department who spoke about his experience responding to devastating car crashes. Students also heard from a woman whose father was hit by a texting 19-year-old. Her message wasn’t about statistics.“That’s what distracted driving really does and for me it’s not a line from a TV show, it’s my reality because the day my dad died my family changed forever,” Tina Yassens said. Other speakers included Judge Albert Camplese, Ohio Public Safety Director Andy Wilson, former Indians pitcher Len Barker, and others.Body found wrapped in blankets near Canton creek identified as 46-year-old woman
