- A stretch of North Prairie Street looked a little different this weekend—lined with vendors, families, and small business owners all working toward one shared goal: building up the community from within.
Outside Union Springs City Hall, dozens gathered for the first-ever “GUD in the City” Small Business Saturday, an event designed to spotlight local entrepreneurs while creating a space for residents to come together and support one another. From party rentals and sweet treats to handmade décor and custom creations, organizers say the variety was intentional.
“We do party rentals with popcorn machines, toaster machines and things like that,” said Tamika Rogers, owner of Party With Us. “Today, I was just sitting around the house doing this. It’s a great thing. It was something that was really needed and it put some money in your pocket. It put a lot more money in my pocket.” Rogers was one of several vendors who set up shop along the street; each offering something different, but all benefiting from the same: community support.
“The sales have been really great. The people have been really supportive,” Rivers said. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity to be out here and share my business with people, but the money is a great thing too.” The event was organized by Genesis Unity Development, a group of Union Springs locals focused on revitalizing the city by investing in its people and its businesses.
Organizers say their mission goes beyond hosting events, and they want to help modernize the community and encourage residents to reinvest in their own city. “Our goal is to modernize our community,” one organizer explained. “We wanted to start with our businesses — cultivating them and helping them grow as we grow into a better community.”
That vision is what led to the creation of “Good in the City,” an event centered on accessibility, opportunity, and local pride.“You can shop locally, and you can shop within your city, and you can feel at home,” Smith said. “Some things you don’t have to outsource and go to larger cities… we have to patronize home first.”
Organizers say keeping dollars circulating within Union Springs is key to long-term growth—especially for small businesses that rely heavily on community support. “That’s what keeps the community thriving,” said another organizer. “Having all of these businesses here, everybody supporting, everybody shopping with them, it keeps money back into the city.”
And while the event brought out crowds for a day of shopping and entertainment, organizers say the bigger picture is about creating lasting impact.Plans are already underway to continue hosting similar events. And while the event brought out crowds for a day of shopping and entertainment, organizers say the bigger picture is about creating lasting impact: giving small business owners more opportunities to grow and giving residents more reasons to stay, shop and invest locally.
