Vital drugs are either not authorized or are deemed too expensive, as cases rise.
Rates of tuberculosis are on the rise in Europe, but countries are ill-equipped and lack access to the latest drugs targeting the worst strains.
TB cases in the EU, Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway have risen in the most recent years for data, in 2021 and 2022, when previously they had been steadily declining. And it's a global trend: In 2022, 7.5 million people were newly diagnosed with tuberculosis — the worst year on record. Although Europe has made progress in driving down overall rates of TB, the disease is not the priority it once was and European health systems are ill-placed to respond to the emergence of resistant strains. “At this price, you have to ration everything out, or decide whether to give the treatment or not. At €40,000, you’re lucky if you treat one or two ,” Laticevschi said.
