From Dreaded Trips to Shared Rails: How My Mother and I Found Common Ground in Fashion

A daughter recounts how her shopping experiences with her mother have transformed over a decade, reflecting a broader trend of blurring generational boundaries in fashion. They now share a love for several High Street brands, highlighting how style transcends age.

Ten years ago, shopping with my mother was a dreaded experience. At 15, while she meticulously examined camel blazers in Karen Millen, I’d be absorbed in my phone, only briefly venturing into River Island to appease her before retreating to the car.

Her taste didn’t align with my preference for sequined and skimpy tops. Today, at 25 and 61 respectively, we happily spend entire days shopping together, sharing a changing room and even trying on the same jeans. This isn’t unique to us; a blurring of generational boundaries is evident across the High Street.

Campaigns featuring multi-generational pairings like Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber for Zara, Heidi and Leni Klum for Intimissimi, and Yasmin and Amber Le Bon for Asda highlight this trend. Youth-focused brands now attract older, trend-conscious consumers, while established brands appeal to younger shoppers seeking quality. For my mother, Christine, and me, borrowing from each other’s style has become natural. We’ve discovered six High Street brands we both adore, each offering pieces we consistently gravitate towards.

Reiss stands out for its tailored denim, specifically the Sakura patch-pocket jeans, praised for their flattering fit and quality. Marks & Spencer, under Maddy Evans’ direction, has undergone a transformation, appealing to Gen Z while retaining its core customer base, with outerwear like ‘The Trench’ being a particular hit. ME+EM excels in occasionwear, with jumpsuits being a staple in both our wardrobes, justifying the investment through versatile styling.

River Island, once solely for younger shoppers, has matured, offering collaborations like the floral shirt dress with Cabbages & Roses that appeals to both of us. Holland Cooper provides elegant race day attire, with pussybow blouses and high-waisted trousers being a reliable choice.

Finally, Mint Velvet’s linen and embroidered pieces are perfect for warmer months, with their cream jeans and linen dresses being current favourites, particularly embracing the season’s must-have colour, red
