Long Weekend will swap its international theme every nine months. First stop: Cuba
A new North Beach bar is transporting patrons around the world, all without leaving the intersection of Broadway and Columbus Avenue. Long Weekend , the newest venture from the hospitality group behind Bourbon and Branch, Local Edition and Pagan Idol, is located inside the century-old Italian American Bank building overlooking the neighborhood’s busy main intersection.
The twist? The watering hole will switch its cultural theme every nine months, introducing customers through an immersive atmosphere and carefully crafted drinks to different parts of the world that have inspired modern cocktail culture. First up is is Havana, the capital city of Cuba. Brian Sheehy, Future Bars CEO, said his group opened the cocktail bar with the belief that “more people should get to experience Cuba and Havana in person,” noting that the prospect is “not a straightforward process these days.” In a statement, Sheehy said that his visits to the country “have always been inspirational,” mentioning Havana’s “drinks, the art, the inherent hospitality, the joy and resilience of the people, the contradictions and the beauty of the place." Cultural elements on display at the bar include live music, colorful art, original audio recorded at Cuban nightlife destinations and an animated version of the city’s skyline. “We hope to bring visitors to our place to provide a little experience of what we are all missing out on these days,” he said. The space features two mezzanines overlooking the main bar, and a soundtrack curated by Alejandro Del Valle, a Cuban composer. Meanwhile, an underground vault, “La Bóveda,” will exhibit Cuban street art and showcase Cuban reggaeton. In a nod to the building’s history, the bank’s original safe-deposit box vault has been repurposed into an exclusive club, where members get their own box and key, as well as special gifts including personalized tasting glasses and sample-sized selections of bottled spirits. For the Cuban edition, Future Bars has partnered with artist Reynerio Tamayo, who will auction his pieces at the end of the nine-month stint. Proceeds will benefit his children’s art school in Havana. Supervisor Danny Sauter, whose district includes North Beach, says the new opening is bringing “color and cheer to an important corner of the neighborhood. “This is a historic row that has been home to great jazz venues and groundbreaking LGBTQ+ spaces,” he said, adding that Long Weekend will “carry on this legacy of celebrating our city’s nightlife and hospitality.” Classic versions of daiquiris and mojitos at Long Weekend will start at $14, with flavored options costing $15. Once mixed, the daiquiris can be poured over ice, blended or served with shaved ice. Bottled cocktails, such as a Cubra Libre made with house cola, are available for purchase, as are punch bowls for sharing among several guests. Beverage director Jayson Wilde, who created nine custom blends for Long Weekend’s Cuban expedition, says his team “scoured through distribution catalogs looking for intriguing rums at mixable price points.” A rum blend made with fresh sugarcane is used for watermelon cocktails, while a handful of Mexican rums have been combined to resemble “aguardiente,” an un-aged spirit also made from sugarcane. Rums heavy on molasses and chocolate will be used for dark rum cocktails. Long Weekend’s team wanted to “make the menu incredibly nerdy on the backend without being too obvious to the guest,” Wilde said in a statement. The goal is to make the cocktail bar"feel fun and adventurous without having to read a paragraph for a cocktail description,” he said. Alongside thriving businesses like Uncle Paul’s Ceramics studio, recently celebrating its one-year anniversary in the neighborhood, and Keys Jazz Bistro, soon marking its third year, Sauter said it’s “clear that a sometimes challenged stretch of Broadway is turning a corner.”
