The free program connects EMS crews with families before emergencies occur.

FORT RUCKER , Ala. - Families on Fort Rucker can now enroll in a program designed to reduce stress for children with disabilities during emergency situations. The Special Technology Assisted Resources program allows EMS crews to visit homes, become familiar with any specialized equipment a child uses, and get acquainted with the child before an emergency occurs.

Crews also walk families through the ins and outs of emergency vehicles during the visits. The initiative was modeled after a similar program at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. Fort Rucker officials said the program is intended to ensure a smoother response during emergencies and provide families with additional resources. “It can get rid of all of those concerns so you can focus on the emergency...those kinds of things,” said Brent Crutchfield, Chief of Emergency Management Services at Fort Rucker. The program also provides a tailored emergency plan specific to each family’s needs. It is free for children who may have special needs or who use medical equipment such as feeding tubes or medication pumps.
