A digital forensics report has confirmed the authenticity of videos showing former Congressman Eric Swalwell in a hotel room with a woman, amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct against him. The congressman has resigned and denied the claims, while investigations are underway by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the House Ethics Committee.
A forensic report has verified the authenticity of videos appearing to depict former California Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell engaging in intimate acts with a woman. The report, commissioned and prepared in early January by digital forensics expert Dr. Hany Farid, utilized multiple methods to confirm the footage was not artificially generated or manipulated. Dr.
Farid’s biometric analysis concluded that the adult male featured in the videos is consistent with the appearance of Representative Swalwell. This verification comes in the wake of detailed allegations from multiple women against Swalwell, spanning accusations from sexual harassment to rape. Swalwell has consistently denied these allegations. He resigned from his congressional seat on Tuesday amid increasing pressure for his expulsion from both parties, a move that occurred just hours before a fifth woman surfaced with additional claims. The two short video clips, which have been circulating on social media and were referenced by a Republican lawmaker, show an adult male kissing an unidentified woman in what appears to be a hotel room, and the pair subsequently lying together on a bed. The forensic report was completed months prior to the public emergence of reports concerning Swalwell's alleged sexual misconduct. The report was commissioned by an entity whose identity has been redacted. Dr. Farid, a prominent computer scientist and digital forensics authority, was tasked with evaluating the videos for AI generation, digital alteration, authenticity, and whether they depicted Swalwell. His metadata analysis indicated the videos were recorded on an Apple device in Las Vegas, Nevada, around 5 a.m. Pacific Time on July 13, 2021. The report noted the video resolution was consistent with footage captured by the Snapchat application on an iPhone. The report explicitly states, There are no obvious visual anomalies in either video that would suggest that the videos are AI generated or otherwise manipulated. Employing standard facial recognition software, the individual in the footage was compared against images of Swalwell from a similar timeframe. The report acknowledges that the video quality is not ideal for precise biometric analysis due to the angle and relatively low resolution, and that the research did not involve comparing the subject against alternative individuals. Nevertheless, it concludes, a facial biometric analysis is consistent with the conclusion that the adult male in the videos is Representative Eric Swalwell. Swalwell has publicly refuted claims of his presence in the room with the woman, stating, Right-wing political operatives are pushing this narrative that somehow I was in that room with Eric Swalwell, and that is an absolute lie. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation into the allegations. Simultaneously, the House Ethics Committee announced its own inquiry into claims that Swalwell may have engaged in sexual misconduct, potentially involving an employee under his supervision. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is also investigating the new allegations, as confirmed by a spokesperson. Furthermore, prosecutors have been assigned to review the case by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, according to reports from CBS News and The Hill
