FLORALA, Ala. - Florala is getting its first official storm shelter, a $3 million project that will protect students, athletes and the community when severe weather strikes. The facility will be built on the grounds between Florala High School ’s ballfields and is set to hold 320 people. Construction begins this summer.
“As a parent myself, that’s the first thing I think about. Where are my kids? Are they safe?” said Kyle Davis, Florala High School athletic director. Until now, Florala has had no answer when a tornado warning sounds. Students head to the hallways and wait.
Jayla Morrow has spent four years at Florala High School running cross country, cheering, leading clubs and riding out storms this way. “I think this is a major win for us. I think parents should feel safer, and I know that it should be easier for students to feel more at ease about the building that they’re going to be in,” Morrow said.
“A lot of times you don’t have that opportunity. And so giving our people of Florala something they can depend on and count on in that kind of situation, that’s vital and it’s huge,” Davis said. The shelter will also serve as an indoor athletic complex, giving Florala’s teams dedicated space they have never had. The facility will be open to everyone.
