EAGLE RIVER , Alaska - Break-up season has arrived in Anchorage, bringing potholes and large flood waters around the municipality. The yearly occurrence results from a higher sun angle, longer daylight and rising temperatures, according to the Alaska’s News Source First Alert Weather Team.

At the Sanctuary of Eagle River, a Pentecostal church near Fire Lake, flooding has become a recurring problem. Pastor Paul Derrick Seagraves said the church has experienced flooding on its property for the last four to five years. He said this year, the flooding is worse.According to Seagraves, a large body of water formed near the church’s entrance about a week ago. At its deepest point, Seagraves said, the water is about three feet deep. He said the flooding can be intimidating to people interested in attending the church. “And if somebody drives by and they see, ‘oh, that property is flooded’, then they might write us off,” Seagraves said. The flooding, according to Seagraves, comes from the hillside near Fire Lake Elementary School, which drains onto the church’s property. Seagraves said the property sits in a depression, causing water to accumulate during the spring melt. The flooding has forced the church to cancel services in the past when conditions became unsafe for members to drive through. “We’ve actually had to cancel services before because people just weren’t feeling safe to come through,” Seagraves said. Seagraves said the conditions of melting and freezing on the property takes up a lot his team’s team. Beyond the flooded driveway, ice has built up in front of the church’s main entrance. Seagraves said people have to clear the main entrance area of ice every day. According to the Municipality of Anchorage, people can report flooding concerns in Eagle River to the Eagle River Street Maintenance Dispatch at 907-343-1510.Residents move in: City opens tiny homes to treat addiction among those experiencing homelessnessAnchorage votes on propositions & Assembly, school board seats
