Zehra, a 52-year-old woman from Essex, experienced a common yet challenging consequence following significant weight loss achieved through gastric sleeve surgery. After losing over eight and a half stone, she was left with substantial loose skin that impacted her self-esteem and clothing choices.
This is a frequent issue for individuals undergoing rapid or substantial weight reduction, whether through surgical intervention or medication, as the skin, having been stretched over a prolonged period, loses its elasticity and ability to retract. The decline in proteins like collagen and elastin, crucial for skin firmness, contributes to this effect, particularly with age and rapid weight loss. Exercise alone often proves insufficient to tighten the affected areas, such as the abdomen, arms, and thighs.
Zehra sought a solution and, through recommendation, consulted surgeon Mo Akhavani at The Plastic Surgery Group.
