Alaska Fish and Game officials rescued a moose after it became entangled with a backpack in its antlers.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Fish and Game officials rescued a moose after it became entangled with a backpack in its antlers. “This is the first backpack I have seen on a set of moose antlers,” Cory Stantorf, Anchorage Area Biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, said.

Stantorf said he felt disbelief at first, thinking something else had been mistaken for the backpack. With moose in rutting season, many frequently rub their antlers on trees and other objects. Stantorf said the behavior sometimes leads to entanglements with human objects. “Part of that rutting behavior is rubbing their antlers on trees. Houses also work, and that’s where they catch up with dip nets hanging on the back side of a shed,” Standorf said.“It was more of disbelief that that wasn’t actually the case,” Stantorf recalled. “It wasn’t until we got pictures that we were obviously proved wrong that it was, in fact, an actual backpack.” Linda Greene, a nearby resident, captured footage of the moose on her Ring camera and immediately reported the sighting to authorities. Fish and Game officials located the animal, sedated it and successfully removed the empty backpack.“The biggest thing that we’re concerned about with any objects in antlers is their impact to feeding, walking, or vision,” Stantorf said. “If any of those are impacted, we want to do our due diligence to right that wrong.”“A lot of these reports and this information come from the public calling in and telling us, ‘hey, there’s an injured moose’ or ‘hey, there’s a moose with a backpack in its antlers,’” Standorf said. “That is critical and vital for department staff to be able to track these animals and then catch up to them and safely sedate them,” Stantorf said. The backpack was empty when removed from the moose’s antlers.
