The first trailer for the'Hunger Games' prequel novel'Sunrise on the Reaping' was released on Monday, bringing audiences back to the games and the world of Panem.The newest installment is based on the novel'Sunrise on the Reaping' by Suzanne Collins, which published on March 18, 2025, and returns to Panem 24 years before the events of the original Hunger Games trilogy.'Sunrise on the Reaping' follows the events of the 50th Hunger Games, otherwise known as the Second Quarter Quell, where twice the number of tributes went into the arena to fight to the death.
The story follows Haymitch Abernathy from District 12, who went on to win the games and later mentored Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the original trilogy.The trailer shows Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, who was played by Woody Harrelson in the original series, as he enters the 50th Hunger Games. One of the darkest'Hunger Games' books in the series, the trailer is bright and colorful to juxtapose the terror and horrors the tributes will face during the Quarter Quell.
The trailer also gives a sneak peek at the all-star cast. McKenna Grace is seen as Maysilee Donner, one of Haymitch's district partners who also gets sent to the 50th Hunger Games, alongside Ben Wang, Iona Bell and Molly McCann. Whitney Peak will star as Haymitch's girlfriend, Lenore Dove, a Covey descendant of Lucy Gray, the protagonist in the other'Hunger Games' prequel,'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.'Familiar faces will also appear in the movie , with Jesse Plemons playing a young Plutarch Heavensbee, Ralph Fiennes as a young President Snow, Kieran Culkin as Hunger Games host Caesar Flickerman and Elle Fanning as a young Effie Trinket.
