Richard Roeper joins us to let us know what’s new to watch this weekend. Looking for something to watch with mom this Mother's Day weekend? There are some new releases that could fit the bill. – It’s “Babe” meets “Knives Out” in this whimsical mystery about a flock of sheep who investigate the murder of their beloved shepherd.
Hugh Jackman is perfectly cast as George Hardy, a weathered and rugged loner in an idyllic British countryside village who loves his sheep so much he gives each of them a name. The wonderful supporting cast includes “Succession” star Tim Derry as a bumbling but determined policeman, Emma Thompson as a big city lawyer, and Molly Gordon from “The Bear” as an American girl with a mysterious past. Oh, and the sheep talk as well! Julia-Louis Dreyfus and Brett Goldstein from “Ted Lasso” are voicework standouts. This is a sweet, charming, family-friendly film. – What a week for our animal friends! In this smart, funny and emotionally powerful adaptation of the bestselling novel by Chicago author Shelby Van Pelt, a giant Pacific octopus serves as the narrator.
Not that this is a cutesy animated film – it’s a work of “magical realism,” set in the Pacific Northwest. The legendary Sally Field does magnificent work as Tova, a stubborn, independent woman who has never truly confronted her grief, while Lewis Pullman does fine work as a young drifter who is bearing a similar emotional load. Although we hear the voice of Marcellus, the characters don’t; he’s there as the story guide, and the conscience of the film.
It’s a tricky concept, but director Olivia Newman pulls it off beautifully. I expect this to be an enormously popular selection on Netflix, and deservedly so. Keep the tissues close. – Antoine Fuqua’s by-the-numbers biopic of Michael Jackson has some electric moments – but it feels more like a feature-length tribute act than a comprehensive, in-depth, psychological study.
Re-creations of iconic moments such as the Motown 25th anniversary special and the “Thriller” extended video are executed with impressive technique – but we can already see the original performances on YouTube online, so what’s the point? Also, the story ends with the 1988 “Bad” tour, stopping short of the child sex abuse allegations that would follow, and has a title card saying, “His Story Continues…” This seems tone-deaf at best and irresponsible at worst.
– After a 20-year wait and a ubiquitous marketing campaign, expectations were almost unrealistically high for the sequel – but the movie delivers. With the “Core Four” of Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt effortlessly returning to their respective characters, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” serves up just the right combo platter of nostalgic callbacks, social commentary about the current state of magazine journalism, romance, friendship, betrayals, plot twists -– and of course, fashion.
We get a steady stream of stunning and meticulously rendered costumes, from New York City to Milan, and just as many crackling sharp one-liners. This is a good old-fashioned, star-driven, mainstream comedy/drama that hits all the satisfying notes.
