One Piece season 3 release plan and its implications for adapting the entire story
Movies & TVNewsOne Piece

Netflix released One Piece season 1 at the end of August 2023, and season 3 was announced in August 2025. With a quicker turnaround, it could handle more story arcs, providing fans with a long-awaited continuation.

One Piece season 3 is on the way, and its release plan thankfully solves the only major flaw with Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

The streamer released One Piece season 1 at the end of August 2023, with its eight episodes chronicling almost the entirety of the East Blue Saga. The live-action show was quickly met with positive critical reception and astounding viewership numbers. Just two weeks after the premiere, Netflix officially announced season 2.

However, it took a little over two and a half years for One Piece season 2 to arrive. This was due to several factors, including the production delay caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike and the show's longer filming period. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait nearly as long for season 3. Season 3 was announced in August 2025, roughly two years after season 1 premiered.

The next batch of episodes began filming in November, four months before season 2’s debut earlier this year. As a result, Netflix has officially confirmed that One Piece season 3 is slated for release in 2027. That alone is good news for those eager to see the next chapter of the Straw Hat Pirates’ journey through the Grand Line. There could be bigger implications to this, though.

Season 3’s release plan might hold the key to live-action One Piece properly adapting its source material. One Piece Can Realistically Adapt The Entire Story Oda began publishing the One Piece manga in 1997, and it continues to this day. So, having the live-action series follow in the anime's footsteps, and attempt to adapt the entirety of the manga's major story arcs, is a daunting prospect — but not necessarily an impossible one.

The key in this case is ensuring that each season of Netflix’s One Piece can be filmed in quick succession. One Piece season 2 began filming in June 2024 and concluded the following December. Season 3 began filming in November 2025 and is still going.

In contrast, over two years passed between season 1's wrap and the start of season 2’s production. While seasons 2 and 3 were certainly not back-to-back shoots, the shorter gap between them explains why the latter season is coming out so much sooner than the former one. What would be great is if that gap could be further narrowed down.

The cast and crew would still need time to rest and recuperate, but if One Piece can get into a rhythm where three seasons can be produced every four to five years, that’s a strong pace, especially for a fantasy show of this magnitude. With 11 primary story sagas to cover, the question then becomes how long Netflix would be willing to make the series.

Considering the One Piece franchise’s popularity, presumably, it stands a better chance of a long run than most other shows. After season 3, the live-action series will have officially covered two of One Piece's sagas. With a quicker turnaround, it could handle much more. Why One Piece Season 3 Couldn't Wait Another 3 Years Netflix made the right decision to renew One Piece for season 3 while season 2 was being filmed.

While season 1 was a relatively self-contained affair, season 3 serves as a direct continuation of season 2. Now that season 2 has introduced Princess Nefertari Vivi and Baroque Works, the stage is set for Vivi and the Straw Hats to save her kingdom of Alabasta from the criminal organization.

In addition to Miss All-Sunday/Nico Robin, Mr. 0/Crocodile, and King Nefertari Cobra receiving expanded roles, new Baroque Works members Mr. 1, Mr. 2, and Miss Doublefinger, as well as Luffy’s brother, Portgas D. Ace, will be introduced for The Battle of Alabasta storyline. The events of this forthcoming season build more directly on its predecessor than season 2 did after season 1. If too much time passes, viewers will have a harder time remembering what happened in the previous season of the show, or they’ll lose interest and decide to stop watching. This problem has thankfully been sidestepped for One Piece season 3. Now Netflix needs to refine and commit to this release schedule to ensure new seasons can be delivered annually.

If that happens and the streamer is willing to stay in it for the long haul, perhaps the entirety of One Piece's epic story can be depicted as a live-action show, just as it will be on the printed page and in animation. 244 8.8/10 7/10 One Piece 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Action Adventure Fantasy Release Date August 31, 2023 Network Netflix Showrunner Matt Owens, Steven Maeda, Joe Tracz Directors Tim Southam, Marc Jobst, Josef Kubota Wladyka Writers Tiffany Greshler, Diego Gutierrez, Allison Weintraub, Lindsay Gelfand Cast See All Franchise One Piece Creator Matt Owens, Steven Maeda, Eiichiro Oda Powered by Expand Collapse
