Caylon Likely, a Katmai National Park Ranger, died in February a remarkable 32 years after being diagnosed with brain cancer. His mother tells his story and says she will travel to Alaska this fall to help spread his ashes in the park.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Just weeks shy of his seventh birthday, Caylon Ray Likely was given a grave diagnosis by doctors: brain cancer that would only leave him with one more year of life. It was a medical prediction that he outlived by a remarkable 32 years, making it to age 39 before his death on Feb.
22, 2026. Likely lived in Alabama but found a second home in Alaska as a park ranger in Katmai National Park and Preserve, working in the same land that millions of people have flocked to over the years, known for its presence ofHis mother, Valerie Likely, will be making a trip to Alaska in September to spread his ashes in the park, a place where he thrived the most. Likely said she will be visiting some of the places her son spent much of his time, including the cabins he stayed in and the views he embraced.Likely told Alaska’s News Source that there hasn’t been a cause of death given for her son — she said Caylon wasn’t actively being treated for any type of cancer — but that she expects that learning the cause from the autopsy results will give her some measure of closure. Being so young when he was initially diagnosed with brain cancer had Valerie looking for options after doctors told her that Caylon would probably need to re-learn how to walk and talk after major surgery. “The doctors told us that after the surgery and the radiation treatments that he would probably only live one year,” she said. “He defied every single one of those odds.” In an extraordinary feat, Caylon not only surpassed the next year, but went on to graduate from college, his mother said. He had a passion to work with animals and work with the national park service, and he fulfilled that dream, his mother said. Valerie said that Caylon was at home in Alabama the day he died. After speaking to her son on the phone the morning of Feb. 22, Valerie said he was not picking up later in the day when she tried calling again. “I just assumed that maybe he was taking a nap or out walking the dog and maybe had forgotten the phone,” she recalled. Valerie decided to drive over to the home her son lived and discovered he had apparently died in his sleep. From an early age, Valerie said her son had dreamt of being involved with animals. “From day one, I can recall him telling me that he wanted to be an archaeologist or a paleontologist, and he was probably six ,” Valerie said in an interview with Alaska’s News Source.Valerie said her son often told her to come visit Alaska, for one chief reason. “Pictures do not do the state of Alaska justice. You have to come see it for yourself,” she recalled him saying often. Caylon captured his love of Alaska in photos and shared that love with friends and family — anyone he knew — by creating photo calendars using his photography, Valerie said. Starting the first year he landed in Katmai , Likely sent out calendars as Christmas gifts, often spending $300–$400 of his own money each year, according to his mother.Valerie said she got the opportunity to visit Alaska and her son in 2022 when she booked a cruise trip to meet Caylon in Sitka. Caylon hopped a float plane heading to Sitka for the day to spend it with his mother.“I remember telling him how he was so right about the pictures not capturing just how beautiful the state of Alaska is,” she said.Valerie said her son’s ashes will be scattered in Katmai National Park, where he spent much of the final five years of his life. In conversations with people he worked with, Likely said her son was known for his compassion and treating others with dignity and respect. “He was the peacemaker, always the peacemaker,” she said. “And just so much knowledge and just love for people.”started by Eric Johnston, a friend of Likely’s from King Salmon, had already surpassed its goal of $8,000 by Monday, reaching nearly $13,000 by Monday evening. Although she says it’s difficult to process the loss, Likely said there’s no doubt that outliving his cancer prognosis was a success story, adding that Caylon lived his 32 years post-diagnosis with vigor.“He had such a big heart,” she said. “And he was such a big man in so many ways, and so many people got a chance to experience that.Editor’s note: Alaska’s News Source makes no representations or warranties of any kind about the authenticity, accuracy, or reliability of any GoFundMe campaign.
