Exploring the new relationship, job discomfort, and summer work life struggles, the author grapples with his freedom vs. commitment dilemma, asking whether he's ready for a long-term deal or should stick with his flexible lifestyle, constantly between commitment and freedom, unsure if he's ready for a relationship.
I've valued freedom my whole life, but I'm suddenly questioning what I really want. I dated a woman over the winter, and it got serious faster than I expected.
I have a new connection that's amazing, always having fun and imagine a future with her, but have not had a big conversation or made anything 'official'. I was always fine with never having had a serious adult relationship. Being tied down to something, like a job or a home, made me anxious. Working as a remote worker in Alaska for summer jobs allowed me to save money, have great experiences, and enjoy the adventure and independence.
Now I'm torn. I could shorten this summer's work season and spend more time in Anchorage, possibly getting a permanent job and making this new relationship stronger.
However, there's another complication: hooking up with a woman I work with during summers. She'll be there again this year. I'm unsure if I'm ready for a relationship and don't want to hurt the woman I'm dating even if we haven't promised exclusivity. You're wobbling on the edge between remaining a free agent and signing a long-term deal, but you can't plant a foot in both scenes.
This never works. You're a free-spirited person, but that's not to say you're immature. You're a very independent, self-aware dude who got soft on love. This is about your freedom, keeping your options open, and trusting your gut or your heart.
You need to decide about the future. You like how good this relationship feels when you're in it. You're questioning everything, and you're thinking about the future. You've had a good run roaming free, but perhaps it's time for a change
