CLEVELAND, Ohio - Faith leaders and community members rallied on the steps of Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in Glenville, calling for respect for elders after a deacon was brutally beaten outside the historic church last month.
Investigators believe Kisner overheard an argument between a man and a woman in front of the church and attempted to intervene from a distance. Kisner’s brother told 19 News the 33-year-old suspect threw the deacon down the stairs inside and brutally beat him.
“This distinguished 77-year-old of our church did not deserve the vicious beating that he experienced for lifting up the church, respecting Black women and always our elders,” a pastor at Wednesday’s rally said. People at the rally said Kisner is in rehabilitation and slowly getting better.
“Our elders are our teachers, our mentors. They are the ones that are showing us right from wrong,” the teen said.
“What we need to do even as a church inside and outside is to make sure that our young folks see that we’re not just saying one thing, but we’re living the thing we say,” a faith leader said.
