SailGP: Sailing's New Professional League Gains Momentum
SailgpSailingProfessional League

SailGP is transforming the world of sailing, attracting significant investment, celebrity owners, and record viewership. The league's innovative approach and high-speed racing are driving its global appeal and establishing a sustainable professional model for the sport.

Auckland hosted a thrilling spectacle as over 10,000 fans gathered to witness the high-speed action of SailGP. Thirteen cutting-edge 50-foot foiling catamarans launched into the first turn, reaching speeds of 55 mph, showcasing a dynamic and often chaotic race.

The event highlighted the growing success of SailGP, a league that has finally established a professional model for sailing, a sport historically lacking such structure. A dramatic moment occurred when the Black Foils, representing the home nation, experienced steering failure and collided with the French team, underscoring the intensity and risk inherent in the competition.

The league's transformation into a financially viable and globally recognized entity is largely attributed to its innovative approach, attracting a diverse group of owners and sponsors. Doug DeVos, the newest owner, along with his American Magic sailing-management group, recently acquired the Danish team, demonstrating the increasing investment in the sport. He joins a prestigious roster of owners including celebrities like Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds (co-owners of the Australian team), soccer star Jozy Altidore, and tech entrepreneur Ryan McKillen.

This influx of capital and celebrity endorsement has significantly boosted SailGP’s profile. The league’s commercial partnerships, ranging from Deutsche Bank to Red Bull, further solidify its financial stability and appeal. The success is a testament to the vision of Russell Coutts, the league’s commissioner, who initially faced skepticism regarding the venture’s long-term viability, particularly its dependence on Larry Ellison’s funding.

Now in its sixth season, SailGP boasts eleven privately owned teams, with valuations soaring from an initial $5 million to figures in the eight-digit range, as evidenced by DeVos’s recent purchase. The 13-race series is expanding its global footprint, with events planned across Europe, the Middle East, the Southern Hemisphere, and New York Harbor. The league’s substantial $12.8 million prize purse and growing broadcast coverage on CBS and Paramount Global networks are attracting a wider audience.

The “Race to Abu Dhabi” at the end of the fifth season achieved record viewership, attracting over 3 million viewers – the most-watched sailing race in history. The combination of high-speed catamarans, skilled sailors, and accessible television coverage is driving SailGP’s global appeal. The F50 catamarans themselves are technological marvels, constructed from carbon fiber and integrated with Oracle Cloud, providing real-time data and immersive viewing experiences through dozens of onboard cameras and sensors streaming over 35,000 data points per second.

Veteran sailing commentator Gary Jobson, once a skeptic, now acknowledges SailGP’s success, praising its structured season, exciting races, and increased visibility for sailing on television. Despite the challenges of his team’s current performance, DeVos is optimistic, drawing parallels to the demanding schedule of an NBA season and emphasizing the opportunity for quick recovery and continued engagement
