) - A $2 million ATRIP-II grant secured by the town of Pine Level aims to improve their main artery in and out of town. The money will be used for interchange improvements for the southbound ramp to get on I-65 at exit 186 .
Many consider it a challenge to get onto the ramp, especially during rush hour, but the state’s grant could alleviate that struggle. “Our mornings and evenings are our biggest time, you have so many people working in Montgomery driving on our southbound exit and it gets into a problem where there’s traffic congestion, people leaving in the morning and coming home from work,” explained Pine Level Mayor Zachary Bigley. “This is hopefully going to alleviate some of that congestion.”However, with no left turn lane onto the ramp, drivers can easily cause traffic to back up on the two-lane road as they try to get onto the interstate.“You’ve got so many people travelling, 55,000 vehicles a day are going right past 186,” Bigley cited. For smaller, newly incorporated towns like Pine Level, A-TRIPP grants can be a real game changer because they don’t have to match any local funding. “Pine Level, we’re so new. Our total, in two years we haven’t even broke half-a-million dollars,” Bigley explained. “That’s how much help we need. We’re on our way, we’re growing, but there’s no local match so for us it’s a big ‘ol breath of fresh air.”Volunteer chaplain arrested at Alabama prison facility
