ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A week-and-a-half-old musk ox calf named Novel is the newest addition to the Musk Ox Farm, where she will stay with her mother, Xenon, until about August, according to education director, Dani Biersteker.
Biersteker said the 75 acres of protected farmland outside Palmer holds the Arctic animals that are only found nationally in Alaska.
“Having a touchstone to the Arctic is so hard for even a lot of us in Alaska who can’t make it up there,” Biersteker said. “So, it’s pretty inspiring to get to see that and be a part of that for our visitors. ”“Every four hours from dawn till dusk, from April 2 through the beginning of June, one of us is out here checking on them — are we having a baby? Are we going into labor?
Have we had a calf? ” Biersteker said.
“They definitely made us wait this year,” Biersteker said. “Musk ox keeping us on our toes since the 1950s. ” “Once there’s one on the ground, those calf checks get a lot easier — because now you get to be out here at 6 a.m. and you’re watching her frolic around while you go check on everyone else," Biersteker said. This week, the farm holds its 40th annual Mother’s Day open house.
Moms are free, and everyone else pays a donation of their choice.
“We get to see so many people make it part of their tradition — and then their kids’ tradition — and then when they have kids, their tradition,” Biersteker said. “It’s so wonderful to see that. ”The Reindeer Farm in Palmer is also offering free entries to moms on Sunday.
