McGee is expected to be sentenced on June 30.
Freddie McGee Jr. was found guilty for murder and attempting to commit a controlled substance crime after just around one hour of deliberation by a Coffee County jury this week, with the trial presided over by Circuit Judge Shannon Clark.
McGee’s conviction comes just over two years after the killing of Ethan Hill, who was shot to death in February 2024. The trial painted a picture of an early day drug deal that turned deadly, with testimony and evidence presented showing that Hill, who bought from McGee and his co-defendants earlier in the day, was at home with friends when McGee and the other defendants arrived.
McGee, who had a gun on him, exited his vehicle and went to attack Hill, who attempted to defend himself and struggled to get the gun away from McGee. The other defendants would exit the vehicle and assist McGee in attacking Hill, who ultimately was shot. McGee proceeded to shoot two more times at close range while Hill was on the ground before leaving the scene.
McGee and his co-defendants, identified as Lena McGhee and a juvenile, were identified as suspects by law enforcement and, after attempts to flee out to Ozark and then Enterprise, were captured and taken into custody. McGee was the only one of the three suspects who didn’t plead guilty in the case, with the other two doing so prior to McGee’s trial and having their cases disposed of.
“I am grateful for the jury’s verdict in this case,” District Attorney James Tarbox said. “With this verdict, the family of Ethan Hill will receive justice and a dangerous, multi-time felon will be sent to prison. This result comes from days of hard work by the dedicated detectives of the Elba Police Department. The result also comes from the diligent case review and preparation done by Deputy District Attorney Toothaker.
