PERKINS TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Perkins Township Police Department is advising residents about scammers pretending to be from the sheriff’s office. In the latest phone scam , residents receive calls claiming to be from the sheriff’s office and saying they have an active federal warrant — a scam called “ signature fraud .
” “Law enforcement agencies will never call and demand money, request payment in cash, or instruct you to withdraw funds to avoid arrest,” the Perkins Township Police Department said. For those who do receive these scam calls, police advise against giving out personal information or money and instead advise hanging up immediately. To check whether a call is legitimate, residents should call the police department directly or contact the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
