Gas prices are climbing due to the ongoing Iran War , with the state average increasing by four cents overnight, leaving many individuals facing financial challenge s. New Hope Ministries is working to provide relief.
The nonprofit organization, which operates nine locations, aims to support individuals holistically, meeting them wherever they are in life. While New Hope Ministries offers a food pantry resembling a small grocery store where clients can shop for groceries at no cost at their Dillsburg, York County location, their assistance extends beyond food. Recently, many people have sought help in the form of gas cards. 'I think everybody is anxious. The cost of everything is going up. Food is up, housing is up, utilities are up, heating costs are up, and now gas prices are up,' said Eric Saunders, New Hope Ministries' executive director. Clients like Mike Hoy have noticed the impact of rising gas prices. 'It's nuts, you know, who can afford a dollar increase on gas? That's crazy. That or heating oil. They are both nuts,' Hoy said. Hoy, who visits the ministry's café for meals nearly every day, shared his thoughts on the ongoing price hikes. 'It's a lot more. Every time I pass the gas station, it surprises the heck out of me. What is it, geez? How long is this going to go on? Because the longer it is going to go on, the higher it's going to go on,' he said. Saunders acknowledged the financial strain many are experiencing. 'I think it's part of the stretch. It's part of the paycheck. The dollars don't go far enough. Something has to give,' he said. To address these challenges, New Hope Ministries provides various forms of assistance, including help with housing, heating, and utilities. 'One of the easiest things we can do is, here is a gas card, go get your gas tank filled, meet your personal goals,' Saunders said. Once clients are connected with the ministry, they often discover additional resources available to them. 'I didn't know you had a GED program. I didn't know you could help me find a job. I didn't know you could help me finance a car so I could afford transportation,' Saunders said. New Hope Ministries acknowledges that reliable transportation is an essential part of employment, and high gas prices can obviously affect that. By providing gas cards, the organization hopes to help keep people moving during these challenging times.
