) - A Union Springs family already recovering from one devastating loss is now facing another tragedy just weeks before the holidays. Back in October, Sheila Young and her family lost their home in a house fire.
The home was uninsured, forcing the family to start over from scratch. Now, Young says her family is once again in crisis after her brother was critically injured in a deadly crash in Bullock County. According to Alabama State Troopers, the crash happened just after 7 p.m. Monday on Alabama Highway 51. Investigators say a woman collided head-on with 64-year-old Eric Ousley, causing another vehicle to crash into the wreckage. One person died at the scene. Ousley and another victim were rushed to the hospital.“He has gone through almost four surgeries already,” Young said. “He hasn’t even had facial surgery yet.” Doctors say Ousley suffered severe injuries, including trauma to his head, liver, lungs, abdomen, and kidneys. Despite the seriousness of his condition, Young says the family is holding onto hope that he may be able to breathe on his own in the coming weeks. Ousley is a father of two and a U.S. military veteran who served for 15 years. After returning home, he worked for years at Commerce Café, where he was well known in the community as “Chef Eric.” “He would take the shirt off his back for anybody,” Young said. “He went the extra mile for people. Everybody loved him.” But beyond the physical injuries, Young says the emotional pain has been compounded by how the family learned about the crash, and what they still don’t have answers to. According to Young, the family was not notified by law enforcement after the crash. Instead, concerns were raised when Ousley failed to show up for work. “The job didn’t even know Eric had been in an accident,” Young said. “All they knew was that he wasn’t there Tuesday or Wednesday, and they knew something was wrong. That’s when we started calling around and found out my brother was in the hospital.” Young says the family still has not received Ousley’s car or personal belongings, including his wallet. She tells WSFA she contacted the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which informed her the vehicle has not been released because the crash remains under investigation. However, it remains unclear why the family was not notified sooner or when the belongings will be released. As the family navigates this latest tragedy, Young says her mother is expected to recover after being rushed to Jackson Hospital earlier the same day as the crash. The family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover expenses and continue rebuilding after the October house fire. Donations will go toward restoring the family’s home and supporting them during Ousley’s recovery.Man injured in early-morning Montgomery shootingADAI donates Christmas trees to military families
