Ephrata will soon reintroduce a pay-to-park system downtown after a year of free two-hour parking.
Parking signs on Main Street in Ephrata have been covered and replaced with temporary two-hour parking sign s for the past year, but soon pay-to-park will return throughout downtown, according to Borough Manager Karen Gerhart .
Business owners like Jose Rosado at Creator Barber Shop on Main Street said they just found out about the new pay-to-park system last week.'That new system is real hard,' Rosado said.Since April of last year, Ephrata has had two-hour free parking due to concerns with the reliability of the previous parking system called after getting rid of the coin parking meters.'Not many towns do that. You know, it's a blessing for us. They help to park two hours free. Now that you need to pay again, it's different,' Rosado said. The borough announced that this month, they are starting to use ParkMobile, a pay-to-park system using eight kiosks placed throughout downtown. You can also pay on an app, by text, phone call, or right on the website.Joseph, a frequent visitor to Jose’s Barber Shop, said, 'When I'm driving downtown, we'll park, I'll get a haircut, or my wife and I will go to one of the coffee shops or Laura's Cookies across the street here. So, it's nice to be able to stop and run and not have to worry about, 'Am I going to come out and find a parking ticket on my dashboard?''Once the new system is up and running, the first hour will be free, then 50 cents every 30 minutes. Weekends will also be completely free. If you have the app, all you need is the zone number and your card information, but cash and coins at the kiosks will still work just fine, too.The new system is not up and running just yet. The borough says they are still waiting to finish signage to make it official. Ephrata police also say that there will be a bit of a grace period, where they will issue warnings as people get used to this new way of parking in Ephrata.
